17: 5 Minute Fridays: You Can‘t Skip Steps
Friday Oct 01, 2021
Friday Oct 01, 2021
In today's 5 Minute Friday solo-pod, I share the origin and reasoning behind my mantra, "you can't skip steps".
I think a lot of process in building a company, in starting a podcast too, and my work in health tech start ups. Everyone wants to be somewhere they aren’t. We assume bigger is better, more is definitely better and it all should have happened yesterday.
Not skipping steps seems tedious, but could there be a more thorough and simple business plan, could there be a more thorough and simple spiritual roadmap?
In this episode, you will learn:
- The power of process
- The influence my Dad had on me at a young age in not skipping steps
- What skipping steps can look and feel like
- How paying attention to the steps along the way can open up worlds and help you develop new skills
- What soft skill Claude Silver says is most important for companies to embrace - hint, it's not radical candor.

She has sought to find and create meaning from every chapter of her life and empowers her clients and teams to do the same. From her first heartbreak, first job loss, divorce and enduring the grief that comes with slowly losing her Dad to a rare form of Dementia, Elisa's rich life experience and humble curiosity is what allows others to connect with her, and ultimately themselves in a deeper way. She finds joy in making her friends homemade chocolate and can most often be found hiking or spending time in nature and has two adorable cats, Josie and Lou.

16: 5 Minute Fridays: On Workplace Grief
Friday Sep 24, 2021
Friday Sep 24, 2021
In this solo-pod, I propose that we give workplace grief a seat at the table. Our identities and much of our sense of self comes from the hours and the energy we pour into our jobs and our careers and yet we barely talk about professional grief. I believe the more we normalize talking and moving through grief in our lives, but specifically in the workplace, the closer we will get to humanizing each other and improving our team chemistry and culture.
In this podcast, you will learn:
- Tactical ways we can use retros and 360's to decompress after projects end so we can not only find closure but glean insights that will allow for growth and pave the way for more improvements.
- How language also plays a huge role in how people establish psychological safety and a sense of belonging in the workplace.
- Why we shouldn't aim to have a resilient workforce because resilience doesn't necessarily equate to joy.
- How corporation in Latin means, "body of people".

14: 5 Minute Fridays: Emodiversity
Friday Sep 10, 2021
Friday Sep 10, 2021
We have conditioned and trained "bad" emotions out of us but the truth is is that a wide array of emotions add to the tapestry of our lives. Being literate with our emotions is the first step towards embodying emotional intelligence and being more prepared to lead with courage and presence. In this episode, I plant the seed that all emotions deserve a seat at the table.
In this 5 Minute Friday, you will learn:
- What emodiversity means
- Who Dr. Jill Botle Taylor is and how her work speaks to the power of emodiverstiy
- Dr. Jill Botle Taylor's TED Talk, "My Stoke of Insight"
- How life without a diversity of emotions is a flat place to live
- How emotions only last up to 90 seconds in the body - and when they last longer, it's because we have a narrative that is fueling the physiological response
- How emotions are data
- The next time you are feeling a strong emotion, ask yourself, "what is it I am needing right now?"

13: 5 Minute Fridays: Finding Meaning With Grief
Friday Sep 03, 2021
Friday Sep 03, 2021
While we are all actively navigating through individual and collective grief, I introduce David Kessler's newest step to the 5 steps of grief: finding and creating meaning. This solo-pod is a primer to help you understand the message of our emotions, namely grief and anger and how to best process them for closure.
In this 5 Minute Friday, you will learn:
- How grief can be sneaky
- What feeling the feeling to completion means and how this plays out in practice
- What anger is here to tell us
- How we can strengthen the muscle of avoidance or attention to emotions
- How grief is a sign that you have loved
- How creating meaning during and after loss provides closure
I recommend watching Pixar's movie, Inside Out to navigate learning the meaning of emotions.

12: Following The Breadcrumbs with Andrea Nakayama
Monday Aug 30, 2021
Monday Aug 30, 2021
Andrea’s become a force for good and change in the world of functional medicine, as a nutritionist who can help chronically ill people get better when no one else can. Her clinical skills have won her the attention of many world-renowned doctors, who consult with her on their own difficult cases. More than that, Andrea trains thousands practitioners every year in how to have the clinical success she’s had. She’s training an army of changemakers in the field of healthcare. Those triumphs came out of Andrea’s own tragedy when her young husband was diagnosed with a fatal brain tumor while she was pregnant with their only child.
I was first drawn to Andrea’s work over a decade ago when I was studying to become a health coach. Little did I know the course I was about to sign up for, Digestive Intensive would change the way I viewed healthcare, problem solving and begin a friendship that would see me through my own personal and professional celebrations and challenges. This episode is raw, it’s real, and it’s brimming with insight and vulnerability. Here we go.
In this episode we cover:
- Andrea's most influential people growing up
- Key learning that Andrea carries with her to this day
- Andrea's , "we get to" to be what we are most passionate about
- How design and art influenced Andrea's thinking and creativity early on in life
- How the loss of her beloved husband, Isamu changed her life and her career.
- What Andrea's superpower is
- What drives Andrea today and her advice for working with unlearning

11: 5 Minute Fridays: Live The Questions
Friday Aug 27, 2021
Friday Aug 27, 2021
In this 5 Minute Friday, I argue that questions are more powerful than mantras. I discuss how questions remove us from the island, or illusion, of knowing and help blow up our narrow perspective on how we want things to be.
In this 5 Minute Friday, you will learn:
- The benefits of asking big questions
- How mantras do have some application but more often, limit our vision
- How fear and love shape the questions we ask
- My favorite question to help open me up from fear: "What does life want from me?"
- How asking questions paves the way for growth, learning, more play and more FUN!
My favorite quote on living the questions by poet and author, Rainer Maria Rilke:
"Do not now seek the answers, which cannot be given you because you would not be able to live them. And the point is, to live everything. Live the questions now. Perhaps you will then gradually, without noticing it, live along some distant day into the answer."

10: 5 Minute Fridays: Quitting Is Showing Up
Thursday Aug 19, 2021
Thursday Aug 19, 2021
Quitting comes with a lot of shame and fear. We are all told from a young age, that quitting is weakness and is a recipe to let yourself and others down. In this 5 Minute Friday, I challenge that notion by sharing my relationship to quitting from a young age through sports and how more recently, I am actively unlearning the meaning and value of stepping away from relationships and pursuits that my body says no to.
In this 5 Minute Friday you will learn:
- How society conditions us to think about quitting
- How we have learned to disassociate from what our bodies are telling us, and then be rewarded for doing so
- The value is listening to your intuition and saying yes to what your body is saying
- Going against the grain is never easy, but it's usually worth it.
- Quitting, when its in the service of your health, is a radical act of self care, badassery and leadership.

- The core learning about materialism and intentionality that continues to stay with Laura Lea decade after decade: “it doesn’t matter how many times you walk into a store and buy things, you are going to want more if that’s your perspective about it. There will always be new shiny things.”
- How Laura Lea has had periods of living to eat and then during times of stress, eating to live.
- What Laura Lea is learning and unlearning about what a healthy relationship looks like.
- What social media “love bombing” can look like (yes, this is a thing!)
- How social media has influenced Laura Lea’s career and how she has had to unlearn what and how to share to her growing audience.

- How we both think about self care and alone time - and how it allows us to show up more fully for those we love.
In this episode, I mention the work of Cal Newport and his book, “Digital Minimalism”.
