5: 5 Minute Fridays: Unlearning Productivity
Friday Jul 16, 2021
Friday Jul 16, 2021
What keeps us stuck in the rat race of production?
Productivity has its roots in evolutionary, cultural and clinical worlds and in this 5 Minute Friday, I take you through some of the more systemic reasons we are driven to staying busy and productivity.
By the end of this solo-pod, you will walk away with 6 insights on how to unlearn and rethink productivity:
- It’s not what you do, it’s how you do it.
- Your “to do” list isn’t meant to be completed, it’s designed to be refreshed.
- From a neurological perspective, your brain literally operates, thinks and creates better during times of pleasure and leisure.
- Culturally? Well, the fear you feel in not producing isn’t really about being productive, it’s about belonging.
- More is not always better.
- Pleasure and productivity aren’t at odds with each other, they complement and amplify each other.

1: Creating Your Agency with NHL Player, Connor Carrick
Sunday Jun 27, 2021
Sunday Jun 27, 2021
In the first ever episode for The School of Unlearning podcast, I sit down with my friend and NHL Defenseman, Connor Carrick. We traverse childhood, pro sports in the NHL and Connor reveals what he believes to be the secret weapon for the next generation of athletes.
This episode is special to me as it bridges the gap between sports and spirituality, a less talked about gift that comes with playing team sports. Connor nudges us to curb our ego, shares his tips on how to settle into the present moment and stop pretending to be someone we really aren't. After 9 seasons in the NHL, Connor finally "lets his shoulders drop", a reminder he uses on the ice to help him tap into flow state so that he can play his best hockey. I have a sneaky feeling that whether you play pro sports or not, this episode will empower you to redefine success and find agency in your life.
In this episode you'll hear:
- How growing up as the oldest of 3 boys influenced and shaped Connor's sense of success
- How to move from "force to flow"
- How Connor embraces the spiritual side of the game and what that means for him
- How pretending/posturing is an energy drain
- How athletes struggle to balance the highs of the sympathetic and the mundane of the parasympathetic in sports
- The power of granting yourself permission to show up fully and lead
- Where the best version of you lives
- Connor's definition of unlearning and finding agency
If you loved this episode with Connor Carrick, click here to learn/hear more from him. Connor is on Instagram @connorcarrick and has his own podcasted called, "The Curious Competitor" which can be found on iTunes and Spotify.
If energy management and embracing the spiritual side of life resonates with you, please tune into my next episode with Jill Payne.

Hello humans! My name is Elisa Haggarty, I’m a Conscious Leadership Coach and the host of The School of Unlearning podcast.
I’ve realized that we spend the first half of life being told what to learn, how to be, and what life should look like, and the second half of life, rethinking and unlearning most of it. On the SOUL podcast, we will take a no holds barred look into uncovering myths and constructs around gender norms, sexuality, career success, financial security, trauma, and more. These conversations are forged with curiosity, reflection, and most of all, uncensored real talk - because unlearning begins with speaking our truth.
The process of becoming more of who we really are, is a coming home. And as cozy as that sounds, it's also an unraveling of sorts--- of our identity, our belief system, our behaviors and even, our communities. Let's face it, unlearning can be glorious, exhilarating, sticky, and also... straight up terrifying.
In my experience, things like unlearning are less terrifying when we do them together. These are the stories of the most curious and successful people I know, what beliefs they carry with them today and the ones they struggle to unlearn. Come ready to reflect on your core learnings and rethink social constructs so that you shed the life that the world told you to live, and begin living the one meant for you.
